Top 3 things to know before embarking on your writing career with EJ Mellow
In episode 13 of the We're All Creative Podcast, EJ Mellow (Jacqueline Mellow), author of Animal Under The Fur, shared the 3 things she wants writers to know if before starting their writing journey. So, we wanted to pull that out of the conversation and share those with you here.
Jacqueline's top 3
"The feelings that you feel and are going to feel... are completely normal and every single person who has ever written or is writing feels that way. Know that you're not alone and that you will feel those things a dozen more times as you're writing. Just keep going. Keep going and you'll get past it and then you'll finish and it will be the best feeling ever."
"Don't be afraid to write bad. It's important. I'm actually trying a new tactic this time with writing. With this latest book I'm trying this tactic called speed writing where I'm just writing and writing where if I can't figure out descriptions or dialog, I just write a bold 'dialog here' and then I pass it and I keep going. And I know that first draft is going to be so rough but at least it's there. Know that your first draft is never going to be good but it's important to have it because without it you'll never have a book."
"It's really good to find someone (and it doesn't have to be someone in the writing community) that you can talk to about your writing because it's a very solitary thing. You're sitting in front of your computer for hours by yourself...and it can feel very daunting. I think it's good to find someone else who you can kind of jump out of your cave with and talk to and just kinda get out there and tell them the things you're feeling."
Jacqueline has also shared a resource for writers if they want to get an agent. You can find that resource here.
