Food blogging + photography with Jessica Hoffman
Jess is a Montreal based food blogger with some serious camera skills. Her recipes are enough incentive to follow along, but her eye for food photography is what truly caught us off guard!
Because we know, that you know, that food blogging is a huge industry right now, we want you to be prepared to take the best photos! So...we asked Jess some questions.
First things first, how did you get started doing food blogging and food photography?
I always loved cooking, being in the kitchen and making recipes. Eventually, I decided to start a blog as a place where I could store the recipes I was creating and it just grew from there!
Are the specific resources you used to learn about food photography or photography in general?
Google and youtube. There is so much free information out there!
Jess is right - Use the internet to your advantage. Not only do we have amazing resources like Google and Youtube, but we also have social media! If you need help or want a few lessons, just reach out to people! Community over competition!
What are 3 tips you can give to our community to start shooting their own food?
Just get started, use your iphone (no need to invest in a camera right away), and keep practicing to get better.
The best part about these 3 tips is how simple they are. The first being to just GET STARTED. How often we hold ourselves back because we aren't the best yet. Well guess what? The best of the best have been practicing for years!
What is your favorite food to shoot? Why!
I love shooting any baked good! I have a huge sweet tooth and creating images of any delicious baked good just gets me so excited!
How long does it take you to prep for your shots? What does this usually entail? How long does it take you to prep for your shots? What does this usually entail? I'd say about an hour. There is grocery shopping, prop selection, and preparing the food of course.
Jess says her favorite part about food photography is that it gives her a ton of freedom to let out her creativity. It truly is like making art for her!
"Creativity to me is sharing our unique inner gifts with the world"
