Daniella Siebert - getting over the thought that your career isn't looked at as "intelligent"
As women in general, and as creative women specifically, we can be met with the common error in thinking that because what we do isn't looked at as "intelligent" the same way as lawyers or doctors, that we aren't doing something that's worthy enough for our time and efforts.
What if people think I'm not smart because of my career choice?
Do people think I'm unintelligent because I've chosen a creative career?
These are thoughts that have crossed not only Daniella's mind, but plenty of creative women on their path to choosing and beginning their creative careers.
Here is what she had to say:
"I thought I needed to spend my time doing something more 'cerebral' or 'worthy' but the more I looked at it, this thing that I've created changes people's lives and I don't say that or take that lightly. I think about all the kind messages and emails that I've gotten that say 'you are changing people's lives, don't ever forget that' and that's everything to me. So when I kind of let go of my ego and stopped telling myself that I needed to do something that made me look smarter, that's when I was able to pursue this thing that really sets me on fire."
From there, we talked about how you can change that thought process and one specific thing came to Daniella's mind– her friend who basically forced her into this career because she knew people needed her...
"I think too, those people who can see the talent in others and pull that out are really special people because we don't think that our talents are talents. It comes naturally to us so it must not be special. Those people who can see what's special about you and pull that out and help other people see that they need what you're good at...those people are really important."
Final thoughts:
- Just because you aren't in a career that society deems as "intellectual" does not mean that what you are doing isn't important or that you aren't changing people's lives.
- Surround yourself with people who pull out the best in you and are just as excited to talk about what you do as they are to talk about what they do
- Do what sets you on fire
